Rangamati Science and Technology University (RMSTU) stands as the pioneering public university in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs) region. It is committed to delivering high-quality scientific and technical education while fostering unity and excellence among its students and faculty. RMSTU's vision encompasses not only academic achievement but also the promotion of social coherence and harmony within the diverse communities of the CHTs. Through a blend of innovative curricula, cutting-edge research, and community engagement, RMSTU strives to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders and innovators.
Rangamati Science and Technology University was established by the ‘Rangamati Science and Technology University’ Act, which was promulgated on July 15, 2001. Following the promulgation, preliminary activities commenced under a specific project. However, the university’s establishment was delayed as the project's activities were transferred to another district. In 2008, efforts to establish the university under the same act were revitalized, marking a renewed commitment to bringing the institution to fruition in Rangamati.
In line with this decision, the "Rangamati Science and Technology University Establishment Project" received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on February 19, 2013. Subsequently, on February 23, 2013, the university was formally inaugurated with the objective of expanding modern scientific and technical education in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, while addressing the country's educational demands.
A comprehensive set of directives and guidelines was established to guide the development of the university's physical infrastructure. These directives emphasize the construction of buildings that preserve the natural environment and ecology, ensuring that the hills remain undamaged. Additionally, the architectural design should adhere to the stylistic principles of Bhutan's architectural sculpture.
The university, established in Rangamati Sadar Upazila, is located approximately 8-9 kilometers south of Rangamati township. In the initial stage, the district administration acquired 63.725 acres of land from the designated 100 acres for the university. On 04 November 2017, Deputy Commissioner Md. Manzarul Mannan handed over the land to Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Pradanendu Bikash Chakma. The academic activities of RMSTU were commenced from the 2014-2015 sessions on 09 November 2015.
